  1. Luminous Mourning.

I stood in the basin staring up at the structure that loomed over the valley, casting a large shadow that covered the village below. I wondered at the size of this great dam! Decades of work had gone into its construction. It stood as a testament to my achievements! 30 years building this stone edifice to hold back the mighty river, I thought the work never complete. Even now I think there may be on going construction. Well things have changed over the years. What I first thought would be a helpful way to stymie the flow of a wild raging current has morphed into a serious problem. The villagers and I have found it difficult to water our crops or fill our wells…we think there are major jams restricting water flow atop the dam. No one is able as we can see it to clear the jam. We’ve been coming up with a plan to blow the thing down, otherwise its going to give one day when we are not prepared. As the day draws to a close a plan is put in place, we will blow it up in the morning. Some of the villagers stay up through the night preparing the charges.

We assemble on the base of the damn and set charges strategically in place. When the all clear is given the fuse is lit! The explosion is tremendous and rocks the ground as we stand off in the distance watching in disbelief. The charges set below compromise the integrity of the colossal wall of stone…the stones were huge and had come at great expense. They had been mined from three quarries many miles away, known as fear, lack, and hate. We knew that as the crack shot through the middle of the dam like a lightning bolt our village would soon be washed away…maybe its better this way I mused as the stones gave way and began plummeting down into the basin. The water was a unstoppable force of destruction, wiping out everything in its path. I watched in horror as I saw mighty oak trees roots and all being rushed down stream to where I don’t know. I thought this isn’t fair what have these poor trees done to deserve this fate? I felt them cry out not to mourn for they were happy to see the river win against this abominable barrier that was choking out life in the valley.

As the water level came down and the current calmed in its new path we assessed the damage. The village that had lived in the shadow was no more. We would have much work ahead of us to rebuild along the river that had once been stymied but now flowed freely. I looked up and saw something I hadn’t seen from this vantage point since I was a small lad, the sun shown through lighting up the valley in its golden rays! We all began to realize that though this day was defined by loss, it was also a day that marked the suns warm return! Also on this day we all agreed that the stones that lay before us would be worked and shaped for a new purpose. We would assemble the foray of rubble into a temple to facilitate growth and learning so as never to forget the lesson taught to us that day.
